The ‘Living Connection’ exhibition at the Väinölä shortwave station

Venue: Väinölän vanha lyhytaaltoasema·Address: Radioasemantie 1·Organiser: Työryhmä Johanna Latvala, Antti Nykyri & Niilo Rinne

The exhibition *Elävä yhteys* (Living Connection) at the old Väinölä shortwave station celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) by shining a spotlight on its shortwave broadcasts from Pori to other countries. ‘Elävä yhteys’, a site-specific work, uses the medium of installation art to explore the early stages of shortwave radio broadcasting in Pori, as well as the nature of the station building itself and radio waves.

The exhibition takes its name from a speech given by President J. K. Paasikivi at the station’s inauguration ceremony in 1948, in which he used the phrase ‘living connection’ several times when referring to the connection forged between the world and Finland – which was opening up to the world – by shortwave technology, which represented the cutting-edge technology of its time and which Paasikivi called ‘the marvellous invention of our age’.
